A CRC Ed Kit

This forum aims to BE USED as a CRC kit including:

Core themes:

  • Children's rights are human rights that need extra care

  • 5 Core Principles of Children's Rights – ”the high five”

    Identity, Protection, Participation, Development, Survival

  • The right to play is the right to learn!

  • Rights couple with responsibilities ~

  • The root of Children's Rights: "I exist. We exist!"
  • Embodiment of rights: rights express the dignity of being human

Important notes:

  • Standing up for rights is a way to take responsibility for them, not a way to compete with adult priorities and control
  • Child Rights awareness supports what is already happening in the classroom regarding community agreements, norms, values
  • Mutuality: one's rights should never stamp out another's rights.

Ethical Working Group for Child Rights

Who are we?

Our Working Group for Child Rights is an outgrowth of a collaboration done by a few distinct groups: The NGO Committee on Children’s Rights/NY, the National Ethical Service and two Ethical Culture Societies under the American Ethical Union, the New York Society for Ethical  Culture and the Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture.

From left to right: Marlena Horton, Melissa Heckler,

Margaretha Jones, Thérèsé Folkes Plair, Maria Mitchell,

Marlene Williamson, Audrey Kindred, and sitting: Muriel Tillinghast

(Lindsey Price Jackson in abstentia)

In 1989, the United Nations adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). This is an international treaty. Every country in the World has ratified it except the United States.

Our first collaborative CRC program was on November 18, 2025 at the New York Society for Ethical Culture. Among the speakers were Youth Activists (i.e. one from LaGuardia High School, one from Columbia Secondary School). There were four (4) short videos from schools from the New York Metropolitan Area, one from Canada and one from Namibia, “rapping” an article from the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

What do we Want?

To raise awareness to young people, lawmakers, educators, human rights activists about the CRC and make it a yearly celebration and commemoration of this worldwide achievement on WORLD CHILDREN’S DAY.
